Wong Chiu Tat
Wong Chiu Tat (黃照達) is an artist whose comics are published daily by one of Hong Kong's larger newspapers, Ming Pao. His strip, called Zi Zi Za Za (translated literally) which I would translate as meaning White Noise, are typically four to six panels and comment on current social and political events. His work is a great representation of humor revealing truth; many of his strips critically analyze the Hong Kong government. Chiu Tat also recently published a book called Lonely Planet where the protagonist is a fired designer. Besides working as a professional artist, he lectures on comic and alternative art at Baptist University Hong Kong.
The blog he runs features a series of work called Hello World that consists of full pages of comics following a small boy called Wong Yut. Here, as in his strips for Ming Pao, the thoughts and reactions of the characters in the comic reflect current affairs ironically and with a grin.
My Chinese reading capability is good enough to make sense of the gist of things, but a lot of the more specific jokes and references pass me by. I enjoy the graphic style of his work without even reading the text though. It's similar to Chris Ware's work, perhaps most known for Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth. Chiu Tat's clean graphic sensibility stands out in a newspaper and is calling Hong Kong's attention to design by making it relevant to what people care about.

what did we think: --
to be an egg, a slice of cheese, a banana or a banana cheese egg or cheese banana egg.
i want to be one or the other or both perfectly together.
and i'd like to be the middle of a sunny side up egg, the hue of the golden arches, the familiar post-it note; yellow things so distinctly white. i'd like to be the double-skin milk pudding, the rabbit in the moon, the outside of a barbecue pork bun; white things so clearly yellow.
i want to be first this and that, but desire most of all - both combined.
to be yellow, to be white, to be an egg or some cheese or a banana, all three
i am chinese-american or i am american-chinese.
i am white and yellow or pale pastel golden hued;
i want no name or category or place and i want all three.
inspired by someone very very brave,
who is a hero in my eyes for many reasons

what did we admire: ZHOU FAN

ZHOU FAN
26 year old chinese contemporary artist from shanxi province - exhibited in shang hai, germany and new york and hopefully budding more, gaining more recognition - continuing to produce good work. really took off when chosen as one of top 25 emerging chinese artists at the Chinese Art Prize by renowned international critics.
inspired by dreams, jelly fish, childhood, tentacles and sea creatures...things other than reality. zhou fan's work fascinates me for it's fantastical elements. (which is quite normal of me to like.) the ideation / imagination element catches my attention. not only aesthetic - zhou fan incorporates variety of cultural meaning, political thoughts and opinions and social commentary into his art. which is always key for design. it not being merely good design - but good design with an impact, with substance.
things i admire:
color
detail
fusion of cultural history and background
emotional expression
dream derivation
chinese contemporary artist
so this is a what did we aspire as well
