planning to try to attend this - march 27 to april 14 so i figure i can smuggle in some free time... should be pretty interesting and have some awesome pieces (though i'm not planning to buy anything as they suggest).
"Small Favors is GRNY's big show of small scale artwork. Close to 70 artists were invited to create works in any medium they chose, but at a maximum size of 5 x 5 inches. This show is a great chance to get your hands on some great art for your cozy city space. "

i unfortunately have no photos of this event as a result of the fact that we had our own "professional" photographer documenting the entire process (preston hartwick)
the rundown was as follows: 3:00 everyone helping out gets there at and sets up. we all fold a lot of cards for selling, each packet had eight cards and featured one artist (all people we know from my old high school) and 8 of their pieces. we also set up the pieces for auction and prep the sound system and such. (i make a lot of posters.) 7:30 doors open and people all come filing in to look 7:40 (ish?) play LiNK awareness video and ariana introduces the night 7:50 everyone wanders around room, eating refreshments, buying cds, shirts and cards and bidding (or rather...viewing and not bidding) on pieces of art 8:30 (i think) suhail plays and sings a song for the people of north korea 8:45 begin national geographic documentary on north korea 9:30 everyone looks and wanders around room again after documentary ends 9:50 everyone has basically left except for us that are helping out and are friends that enjoy mingling and catching up 11:00 finally leave venue after packing up, give ourselves pats on backs
i would love for all of you to go now and check out LiNK (they also have a blog and a great resources section) and maybe think about something you could do to help out

i could write a million posts on this issue of north korea and what we can do to help. but i would prefer for you to genuinely be interested and seek out ways you can be involved.

Millions starved, hundreds of thousands were imprisoned in concentration camps, and tens of thousands crossed borders seeking food, money, protection and even freedom that they never knew existed. "Let Morning Shine! : SEEDS" is a charity event intended to bring awareness of the present situation in North Korea and to practically assist those in need.
The evening will feature a documentary filmed by a national geographic reporter and her camera crew, who were only able to film this by posing as nurses/doctor assistants to a Nepalese eye doctor visiting North Korea to heal 1000+ people of cataracts . There will also be live musical performances of some of the songs from the first-ever cd of music entirely written for the people of North Korea; a cd which was released in February, 2008 and which will be available during the evening. Finally, there will be an art auction with most of the artwork being created for the event by artists from Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United States. Featured artists include students from Parsons School of Design in New York, as well as Eric Lafforgue, a professional, freelance photographer whose work has appeared in numerous publications such as National Geographic, Lonely Planet, the Times, BBC, Reader's Digest, Blue Planet, and CNN Traveller.

The money made from the event will be donated to two projects: 1. a project coordinated by LiNK (Liberty in North Korea) called SEEDs. The money will aid North Korean refugee children in the specific areas of food, education, and shelter. The concept of this project, SEEDs, is to "invest in the younger generation" of North Korea, that they might be nurtured, grow up and be able to make a difference to benefit their home country. 2. a non-profit bread factory in North Korea that provides thousands of children in poverty with soybean milk and bread rolls everyday.
